Addendum; Yes, I am aware of the reminders feature. It is welcome and useful, however my thinking is centered around using the slideshow as a visual bulletin board, with pertinent images appearing and disappearing in the slideshow rotation as relevant. Alarms would be both too obtrusive and too easily dismissible, and I would find this feature to be a bit more customizable than the reminder system because of the variety that I can make with the raster images themselves.
