    I think what would be great is to play one or more "web albums" (not linked, rather images on your servers) PLUS emailed pictures. That would automatically put the newest images on the frame (coming from multiple family members sending them in) plus an edited list of old time favorites "Favorites" web album, plus perhaps another topical web album. You might want to use "Pix-Star" album (your servers) rather than the more generic "Web" album (could be any online service) to differentiate and clarify for your users.
